Testimonial - Athlete Profile:  Jonnai Mauch

Carole Turnbo

I started working out at Michiana Adventure BootCamp with Jim in July of 2007 with the intention of doing a four week bootcamp three times a week and calling it a good day! BOY WAS I WRONG…. I jumped feet first into this and have been loving it ever since. By October of 2007, Jim asked me if I would like to work for him and in December of that year I received my personal training certification.

I am now certified in the following areas:
CF Level 1
CrossFit Nutrition
CrossFit Gymnastics
CrossFit Olympic Lifting

I have been doing CrossFit since July of 2007 and Coaching CrossFit since July of 2008 - There is no better feeling in the world than walking into a class full of people and guiding them through the steps of a workout. If I am having a “bad” day…the one thing that can get me moving is coaching a class.

I love working with all levels of people- and in my 6 years of coaching CrossFit:

I started a “Fit Club” at Schmucker Middle School.
I've coached the Penn Girls Rugby Team in fitness.
I've started up and coached outdoor fitness boot camps.
I've started up and coached at CFM's Corporate Boot Camps.
I currently coach boot camps for PHM Community Education program
– and my original true love is coaching at the gym.
I currently coach corporate boot camp for MoRyde in Elkhart, IN.

My advice to anyone looking into doing CrossFit is simple – ANYONE and EVERYONE can do CrossFit!

I used to be an “I can’t” girl, I used to say “but I’m not athletic”….there is NOTHING more wrong! I went from never working out a day in my life, never being in a gym, never being on a “team” to finding my passion here at CrossFit Michiana.

I currently compete in CrossFit competitions from partner throw downs to team competitions and individual competitions as well.

In 2015 I finished the Reebok CrossFit Open in 36th place in the world amongst women my age (45-49 age group)
This allowed me to compete in the 2015 Masters Qualifier - where the top 200 women in my age group try to get to that elite 20 that move on to the CrossFit Games Nationals - I moved from 36th place in the Open to finish the 2015 season in 32nd overall.

In 2016 I finished the Reebok CrossFit Open in 59th place in the world among women my age (45-49 age group) - I competed against 8,200 of my peers!
This again allowed me to compete in the 2016 Masters Qualifier - where the top 200 women in my age group try to get to that top 20 that move on to nationals - I moved from 59th place in the Open to finish the 2016 season in 38th overall. 18 spots short of my goal.

Cathy's Story

If someone would have told me all the things that would change about me from the time I walked through the doors of CFM, to now I would have said they were crazy! Which is what I thought Carole was when she started to educate me on nutrition and how all the stuff I was eating (Lean Cuisines, diet bars, fiber bars, whole wheat pasta and bread…the list goes on!) wasn’t doing one bit of good for my overall health. You see, this gym is not just about walking through the doors, getting some exercise and leaving. It’s about your overall health and well-being and teaching you not only the importance of running, jumping, lifting heavy things..... it’s also what you put inside you that’s important. That’s what makes Crossfit and CFM different than your run-of-the-mill globo gym.

I started at CFM after a good friend finally talked me into coming after a year of telling me how awesome it was. I came during a “Bring a Friend” week. And yes, I was pretty skeptical. I have always been active in athletics and I took up running after my kids came along to get rid of that extra baby weight. But, running by myself all the time was pretty boring and time consuming. It seemed like it was taking more and more miles to keep the weight where I thought I wanted it. I just didn’t think a scheduled; class type setting was for me. Needless to say I never looked back from that week! Not once!

I don’t look in the mirror anymore hoping to be skinny – I look for definition in my muscles. Long gone are the days of just losing weight. I now strive to build lean muscle and lose body fat and have never felt better. Since eating paleo and doing Crossfit, I don’t get colds or sinus infections anymore, I don’t worry about every single calorie and I eat when I am hungry. Crossfit and CFM have changed my entire perspective on fitness.

I believe so much in Crossfit and their methods of functional movements that I decided I wanted to be able to coach at the gym. I have received my CF-L1 and Olympic Lifting Certification.

I love our gym community. I never would have thought I would meet so many great friends at a gym. The people that are members here are awesome and make it so much fun to come and work out and to coach.

Suzie's story:

I started CFM in 2012 on a whim. Best Whim Ever!!

For the first year, I would call my husband every day on the way home from the WOD (Workout Of the Day) and start the conversation "Guess what I did today!" I can now lift weights, do push ups, climb a rope, kip pull-ups, row, do double unders, sprint, skin the cat, squat... I feel like I can now do anything!

Before CrossFit, workouts were always something that had to be done to stay healthy and penance for eating ice cream. I NEVER thought I could have that much fun working out. I never thought I could change and have significant improvement in my athletic ability over 40. I never thought I could feel that much like a kid again. My progress is ever present and it is SO invigorating!

I became a coach because I want to share that excitement. I want to help others set goals and achieve them. I look forward to doing kipping pull-ups when I'm 70. I'd love to be medicine free when I'm 80. And my ultimate goal is to live on my own terms and still get up and down stairs when I'm 101 - like my grandfather. I think everyone should look forward to something like this.

My favorite WOD is Michael. I also really love Murph. It was the first WOD that stinks so much and yet made me so happy! Maybe I'm a bit of a Sadist, but I'm hooked!

Oh, and yes, I love burpees!

I still set personal goals and want to help others do the same.

I have coached kids' sports for years, even before I had my own children. I've started run clubs for adults and kids. I've coached t-ball, basketball, cheerleading, soccer and still coach volleyball. I use all of the CrossFit principles as I'm coaching and it has helped the kids immensely. Their progress is wonderful and they think it's fun that their coach will do handstands and run with them. I look forward to getting experience with CrossFit kids. My goal is to help all interested to learn they can do anything they work at and the importance of a good, healthy foundation.

CrossFit seems like one of those things that you either love or you just don't get (although I do think there are some out their who are just natural haters). If you are of weak heart, you will find excuses. But if you believe you really can do anything, you will. (That's the best lesson my mom ever taught me!) The changes you will experience at CrossFit will turn your life in ways you never imagined possible. But be careful, I'm hoping you get hooked, too!
